During pregnancy, it is important to use appropriate navel jewellery otherwise you may experience problems with your navel ring while pregnant - especially in that final trimester.

As you grow and stretch, your navel will expand to a point where your belly ring may become uncomfortable. Excessive stretching can cause purple stretch marks around your piercing, leaving the area less attractive after everything shrinks back down. At worst, it may tear the skin! Barbells, captives and designer belly rings are all too short and can rip as your belly piercing as that tummy expands.

The option used to be to either stretch and/or tear, or remove and forget your navel piercing once that bump started to show. Not anymore. Belly ring jewellery for mums to be has since expanded and includes many stylish and comfortable options for maintaining your belly piercing during pregnancy.

Maternity belly rings are made from materials like bioflex and PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), medical grade materials that are flexible, non-stick substances used in deep surface piercings and are also a popular choice for retaining navel piercings during pregnancy. Likewise, this material is suitable for retaining piercings if you need to go into hospital. If it becomes medically necessary for you to remove your metallic jewellery, it can be inserted in its place, as a retainer, to keep the piercing open until your jewellery can be re-inserted. This material is used in a variety of medical applications, is non-stick, non-toxic, bio-compatible, and autoclavable.

It is always a good idea to talk to your health care provider about your belly ring, while there are few concerns about wearing a belly ring while pregnant, it is possible that there may be specific individual reasons why they could be a problem for you during pregnancy. Your health care provider should be able to help address these concerns. Some obstetricians do prefer the belly ring to be removed, although this is becomming rarer these days.
